Say Hello First
If you’re looking for a professional formula for success, this is it: say hello first.
But after three years of wearing masks and trying not to breathe on each other, it can feel hard. We haven’t seen it modelled, and introducing yourself seems more daunting than it actually is.
If there’s a new person you haven’t met — whether they’re in the lunchroom, on the elevator, or at the gym — the kind thing to do is to introduce yourself.
Try it. Watch people light up: everyone wants to be known and acknowledged.
Meeting new people is also crucial for building your network as a professional. I know, I just introduced that terrifying idea: networking.
But you know what? Networking is not about selling yourself or having awkward conversations that are all business.
Networking is about having a conversation with another human being and making a connection. That’s it. You don’t even have to talk about business.
You can still be yourself; in fact, you should still be yourself, or else your conversation won’t be sincere.
Wherever you are, look around for a new person to meet. Smile, offer your name, and shake their hand. Show them that you’re interested and willing to make a connection.
When you greet someone first, you’ll be seen as friendly and confident. You’ll help the other person feel comfortable talking to you.
Along those lines, make the most of your days working in the office. Find new people to meet. Talk to mentors in person. Meet clients for coffee. Go out of your way to greet another person.
Say hello first. (Can you beat me to it?)
