Talking Effective Email on the XL Legal Podcast

Podcast listeners, this one’s for you. Shelley Appleby-Ostroff invited me onto her podcast to talk about writing emails that actually work. Listen to XL Legal here.

We live in a time of email overwhelm. With hybrid work, we’re all sending more emails than ever before — but we seem to have less time to answer them.

At the same time, we’re spending less time building social capital in person, which is essential for our professional relationships.

We have essentially placed a giant, heavy burden on email: to be our main medium for communication, to convey nuance, and to get our work done.

In our conversation, Shelley and I talked about writing emails that are so effective, they will actually save you time in the long run. It just takes a bit of thought and planning.

Here are a few highlights:

  • How to show you respect the person you’re writing to

  • Using the subject line to your advantage

  • Making sure your email gets read

  • Knowing when email isn’t the best medium

  • Sounding sincere and letting your voice shine

You can find our conversation here.

And yes, yes I do offer an effective email workshop. Contact me here to find out more.
